Bluehost: The good and the bad

Even the most comprehensive web hosting service has its flaws. Here is a detailed rundown of Bluehost's best and worst features.

The Good

Excellent security: Bluehost has one of the best security measures on the market. All of Bluehost's security features are efficient and help you save hours of time optimising your website. You can also rest assured that security is guaranteed, which is especially important for absolute beginners.

All Bluehost plans include resource protection, and CodeGuard Backup Basic can be added for an additional fee of $2.99 per month. CodeGuard helps you with daily backup and monitoring, and notifies you of any changes.

The most basic version of this security feature includes 1GB of storage, daily backups and monitoring, and three restores per month. However, with the more expensive plans like Choice Plus and Pro, you can expect free automatic backups for a year and 24/7 network monitoring.

Comprehensive and fast customer support: another great feature of Bluehost is their comprehensive and fast customer support. Customer support is paramount for any web hosting service, but finding a service with fast and efficient support is not always easy.

Fortunately, Bluehost offers just that, and most users have said that the customer support is very helpful when they need immediate assistance. In fact, there's a good chance that you'll be connected to Bluehost's live chat system within five minutes.

All support is available 24hours a day, 7 days a week, so you do not have to worry about time zones. Bluehost also offers phone and email support, but wait times vary. However, you always have the option to pass the time by browsing the extensive knowledgebase support forum where you will find numerous FAQs, videos, in-depth articles and support resources on all things web hosting.

Easy to use: Bluehost is not only the most popular web hosting service on the market because of its excellent features and products, but also because it is so incredibly easy to use. Ease of use is an important feature because web hosting can already be confusing for some. So there's no reason that the onboarding process has to be difficult either.

But fear not, Bluehost offers a simple onboarding process that only takes a few minutes to get your website up and running. Through an intuitive interface, you'll be prompted to fill out a form stating your goals for the site, what you want to add to your site, and what you want your site name and tagline to be.

After answering these questions, you'll select a theme of your choice from the Bluehost Marketplace and then automatically install WordPress for your convenience. All you have to worry about is customization, while Bluehost takes care of the backend and technical niceties.

Powerful Servers: The last big plus of Bluehost is that it provides very powerful servers to all users who purchase the Pro subscription. While spending more money may not be ideal for every user, we think you get what you pay for. For $14.95 per month, you get access to dual quad processor performance servers that effectively keep large e-commerce websites running.

This server is an excellent option for larger websites, as Bluehost ensures that there are fewer users per server - with an individual file count of 300,000 - so there's no slowdown for anyone.

However, if you do not want to pay the price for these servers, we think the regular Bluehost servers included in the other plans are great and work well.

The downside

No free website migration: now this is where the cons come in. Currently, Bluehost does not offer free website migration, which can be a problem for users who are moving from another web hosting service.

To migrate up to five websites and 20 email accounts, Bluehost requires you to pay a hefty $149.99. Although this service includes 24/7 support, full verification, and a non-disruptive transition, it's still quite expensive for most users - especially when many other web hosting services will transfer your website for free.

It is also unfavorable that this migration service does not cover reseller, VPS or dedicated server accounts and does not include domain registrations.

No guaranteed uptime: unlike most web hosting services, Bluehost does not offer an uptime guarantee with any of its plans. This is concerning because downtime can be very detrimental to website owners, as you may lose potential customers if your website is affected.

An uptime guarantee gives users extra peace of mind and shows them that the provider will keep your website running as efficiently as possible - and that they are serious about customer service and putting their customers' needs first.
