GeneratePress Theme Review 2022
Since I started blogging in 2010, I have tried numerous WordPress themes. But something about GeneratePress appealed to me so much that I switched to it from my previous theme without thinking twice, and I have been happily using GeneratePress for this blog since 2020.
But how is the performance of this popular WordPress theme in practice and is it user-friendly? Also, is it compatible with popular page builder programs? I will address all these questions and more in this in-depth GeneratePress review.
I will also introduce you to the main features of GeneratePress and explain its pros and cons, so you can decide for yourself whether it is the right theme for your blogging needs or not.
What is GeneratePress?
GeneratePress is a freemium multipurpose WordPress theme developed by Tom Usborne. The free version can be installed through WordPress.org and offers basic blogging features.
There is also a premium version (in the form of a plugin) that extends the functionality of the GeneratePress theme many times over.
You can check out my detailed comparison of GeneratePress Free vs Premium features.
With the release of GeneratePress Premium 2.0 in 2021, combining it with the free GenerateBlocks plugin will also give you the ability to fully edit your website or create a complete theme without having to mess with code.
GeneratePress Review
In this review, I will focus on testing the theme based on various parameters to find out whether this popular WordPress theme lives up to its reputation or not.
Let us start by evaluating the design and layout of GeneratePress.
Design and layout
The default installation comes with a boxed layout and is ideal for blogs with a clean and uncluttered design. If you love lots of white space on your site, you'll love this design.

All theme options are accessible through the WordPress Customizer. This is in line with the recommended WordPress standard, which states that the Customizer should be a one-stop store for all theme settings.
Also, the Customizer helps keep things tidy and speeds up theme performance.
GeneratePress Customizer Navigation
GeneratePress theme customizer has a time-saving navigation inthe panel that allows you to quickly jump to the appropriate settings.
Depending on the free or professional version of GeneratePress, there are several options that can be configured in the customizer.
GeneratePress Theme Customizer Options
GeneratePress offers users a lot of design flexibility. You can decide to display your blog posts in multiple columns (grid layout) or one below the other (list layout). You can also put the first post in the foreground and arrange subsequent posts in a grid layout.
If you want to add background images to your pages or header or footer elements, you can easily do so using the Customizer.
There are also several options for configuring the meta information displayed next to each post, such as author name, date, tags, etc.
These options can also be configured separately for your archive page and individual blog posts.
For example, while the free version lets you choose between different header layouts, the premium version gives you additional flexibility to set a different mobile header. You can also use your navigation as a header to give your blog a sleek and modern look.
There are many more design options available in the premium version, such as a sticky header, secondary navigation, footer customization, etc., that you should not miss. For more details, please read my comparison of the free and premium versions of GeneratePress.
In summary, GeneratePress offers a fresh and user-friendly design without requiring you to install 3rd party page builder plugins. However, if you want to use a page builder plugin with GeneratePress, you have full freedom to do so.
Compatibility with page builders
GeneratePress is fully compatible with the leading page builder plugins like Elementor, Beaver Builder, Thrive Architect, Brizy Builder, etc.
The premium version also offers pre-built templates or demo pages for Elementor and Beaver Builder. If you do not use a page builder plugin, you can use the templates created for the default Gutenberg block editor.
Pre-built templates from GeneratePress
Once you enable a page builder plugin like Elementor, you can let the page builder take care of the design of your site while GeneratePress takes care of the global options like font and colors.
