Nation Law Universities (NLUs) conduct a centralised law entrance examination called CLAT every year to test the eligibility of applicants. CLAT is considered the father of all other law entrance examinations because of the special status of NLUs in the country. This year, NLU Ranchi will conduct CLAT 2023. Apart from CLAT entrance exam, there are other popular law entrance exams for which candidates can apply. However, CLAT is the most important law entrance exam and hence the target of almost all law aspirants in India. 


In this article, we take a look at the selection process of NLUs, the eligibility conditions that are mandatory for an applicant to appear in the CLAT exam, the educational qualification and the age limit required to apply for the CLAT exam.


CLAT Selection Process - Admission to NLUs.

Appearing in the CLAT entrance exam is mandatory for applicants seeking admission to any of the top NLUs. This is because the top NLUs only accept the result of the CLAT exam. Therefore, a law aspirant must check the following eligibility criteria before applying for the CLAT exam.


Eligibility criteria for applying for CLAT exam.

Candidates applying for CLAT exam must follow the following eligibility criteria:


Education Qualification


A candidate who has secured 45 percent marks in 12th class general and OBC category is eligible to apply for CLAT examination.

A candidate who has secured minimum 40 percent marks in 12th class of SC /ST category is eligible to apply for CLAT examination.

Age limit


Till 2019, NLUs had set an age limit for candidates to apply for CLAT. However, from 2021 onwards, NLUs have removed the upper age limit for the candidates who can apply for CLAT exam. It should be noted that the selection criteria of NLUs are different from the age limit criteria set for admission to the LLB programme BA.

Step 2 - Based on performance in the CLAT exam, NLUs will shortlist applicants


There is no group discussion or personal interview for shortlisting candidates. Selection will be based solely on performance in the CLAT exam. The better the score, the higher the chances of admission to one of the top national law universities.
