In our modern world, the emphasis on improving productivity, better managing time and resources, and achieving results has resulted in countless books and articles being written and published detailing these topics.

This post is about practical ways to get more done in less time.

Apply these foolproof techniques

Write down your goals and to-do lists.

Let's say you want to turn one of your hobbies into cash, such as quilling, knitting baby hats and caps, or repurposing old jeans into denim tote bags. The first thing you should do is write down the cost of the materials you need and other overhead costs.

Also consider whether you want to sell your handmade creations at a bazaar or craft fair, a gift or souvenir store, or online. You'll need to set up several payment options so that handling your cash flow is as convenient as possible.

Master/discipline your moods.

I've been a freelance writer and editor for about 15 years. I know that a common dilemma for freelancers is getting distracted when faced with a particularly difficult task. I tune into TV hoping to watch something interesting "just for an hour" until that one hour expands into an entire afternoon of mindlessly watching sitcoms or soap operas.

Controlling one's moods simply means not being infected by sudden bouts of laziness, excitement, irritability, or impatience.

Rein in your moods and cravings.

Maybe you're a stay-at-home mom who works part-time entering data and writing blog articles. You know you can't just accept an impromptu lunch invitation with your friends when you're close to a deadline.

Figure out why you're doing something so you can figure out how to do it.

Maybe you're active in your church and want to go on mission trips, but due to limited funds you haven't gone anywhere yet.

However, you know that all you care about is the opportunity to reach people. So you decide to join another ministry in your church, which is to write encouraging letters and notes on blank cards and send them to elderly people in retirement homes, soldiers on deployment, and prisoners.

Prioritizing through omission

Take a sheet of paper and write down 15-20 areas of life and activities that take up your time. Use a red pen and check off five items on your list that you consider "non-negotiable," such as career, family obligations, finances, volunteer work, or membership in a particular group or organization.

Next, you'd put a plus sign next to five items that can be classified as secondary activities. These can be hobbies, or anything you do for fun or recreation. They may or may not bring you additional income, but if they help you relieve stress or relax, then it's reasonable to make time for them.

Then, reduce your list by crossing off 3-4 activities that you only do occasionally or randomly. Next, cross out 2-3 more things that you feel are pure "time wasters," such as spending hours surfing social media, watching Netflix series, or following gossip about celebrities.

That's not to say you've to give up such activities entirely. But if you normally spend an hour or more on social media most days of the week, simply schedule less time on the weekend (e.g., two hours each on Saturday and Sunday).

Use dovetailing to get more done

Unlike multitasking, which tends to be detrimental in the long run because it affects the quality of your work, dovetailing is the habit of combining two tasks that go well together.

A good example of dovetailing is asking your kids to set the table while you heat up dinner in the microwave. The same goes for jotting down your grocery list while you wait at the doctor's or dentist's office.

You can also stay fit by lifting a few dumbbells while enjoying your Netflix shows, or doing a series of squats, steps, lunges, sit-ups and push-ups while listening to podcasts or your favorite music.

Have more time by delegating

Each of us is highly skilled in some areas, but hopelessly inept in others. If you want to continually improve or develop in these areas, make more time for it by delegating the tasks you're not good at to others who're better suited for them.

For example, if you run an online business, you can focus on improving your products and outsource tasks to a freelance SEO copywriter. You can also pay an accountant to take care of invoices and receipts.

If you're a busy mom, consider hiring a babysitter or pet sitter at least twice a month so you can catch up with your spouse or have a few hours to yourself to read, craft, or enjoy a homemade facial. You can also pay a couple of students who want to earn some extra money to clean your yard or vehicle.
