The key to year-round enjoyable landscaping is neither sexy, exciting nor mysterious - it's planning and design structure. To achieve a four-season landscape design, we need to understand design, color and form - and how these techniques are used in creating your home landscape. How design, color and form relate to our desired goal of enjoying your garden year-round depends on staggering our flowers, shrubs and trees so we can take advantage of their natural life cycle. The goal is to stagger our plants so that they bloom in the spring and summer and have a colorful change of leaves in the fall. In the winter, we can rely on the shape of the plants to create something beautiful while everything has either died or gone dormant.

From spring we can divide the season into two sections: Plants that bloom in early spring and late spring. Once the early spring flowers and blooms have faded, the late spring plants begin their ascent to full bloom. Because of this staggered approach, we need to spread these plants throughout the design because we do not want one section to bloom while the rest of the garden is dormant. If we do not keep the big picture in mind, we may get lucky and things will look beautiful naturally, but with the right foresight, we can take advantage of the different life cycles to enjoy the flowers for as long as possible without needing new plants as the seasons change.

Once the long days of summer come, we will not see as many flowers as we do in the spring, because now is the time to enjoy the fruits of our labor. Flower buds turn into fruit, and trees bear the lush green we associate with summer vacations. Here we could have fruit trees or flowers and grasses that thrive in the great heat and long days of midsummer begin to show their wares.

As the days get shorter and fall descends upon our gardens, we will be hard pressed to find flowering plants; instead, we can focus on turning the leaves to add our colorful focal point. Now we can rely on the trees, ornamental grasses, and shrubs because they are the main players when it comes to the beauty of the leaf turn. These plants will show color for the last time this season, because we know that winter is coming, and then we will finally see what I meant by "form", as mentioned earlier.

The leaves will fall off and turn into a colorful mess that will litter our gardens and grounds. The air will no longer be filled with fragrant flowers, the scent of freshly cut grass, and the buzz of bumblebees toiling all day. But that does not mean we are down and out, because we have an ace up our sleeve - just as we have selected flowering plants for a staggered bloom cycle and our shrubs and trees for their beautiful, changing leaves. So we have also planted a few "sleepers" that will not show their benefits until the leaves fall AFTER.

Now we just need to look at the actual shapes or "skeletons" of the shrubs, trees and bushes we planted in the spring. The goal was to look into the future and anticipate what the plants would look like in their bare state, then use them as focal points during the colder months. After the snow falls (if we are lucky), we can look out at our garden and see the beautiful shapes the snow creates on our wintering lawns, gardens and patios.
