Fear is an emotion that is fundamental to our survival and occurs in response to anything we feel threatened by, whether real or imagined. It enables us to recognize danger so that we can protect ourselves. In the brain, fear is triggered by a stressful stimulus that triggers a release of chemicals that lead to rapid heartbeat, rapid breathing and tense muscles, among other things, which is known as the "fight-or-flight" response. Fear activates our "fight-or-flight" response, allowing us to flee to escape danger or fight to survive.

What are the different forms of fear? There are a variety of forms of fear, including fear of: Places, animals, objects, people, events, atmosphere, family members getting sick, getting lost or running away, disasters, disapproval, not being liked, being made fun of, disappointing others, being ignored, being yourself, being hurt, failing, succeeding, making a mistake, being judged, repeating past mistakes, public speaking, feeling guilty, not being good enough, being unstable or crazy, being held accountable, being pressured to perform, having to explain your behavior, being exposed for weaknesses or past mistakes, being useless or unwanted, the unknown, authority figures. Whew! That's a lot to be afraid of.

Although fear is instinctual and happens unconsciously to protect us, it can also be learned from experience and be a conditioned response. This often happens when people experience frightening or negative events or trauma and then anything that reminds them of the trauma triggers the same fear response that was triggered at the event itself. In extreme cases, this is the case with post-traumatic stress disorder. However, to a lesser extent, this happens to most people throughout their lives.

How does fear get in our way? Although fear is there to protect us, it can also prevent us from enjoying our lives. People may experience a conditioned fear response, or one based on irrational beliefs that an object, event, process, or feeling will have negative, catastrophic, life-threatening, distressing, or alarming consequences.

Sometimes people react in the present as if something from the past is repeating itself. Anxiety can have negative consequences throughout life as people avoid opportunities to grow or have new experiences. They may miss out on much of what life has to offer. They may overreact based on past experiences.
