As the first person of Indian heritage, she entered space. She was born on July 1, 1961 in Karnal and was the youngest of four children. She earned a degree in aeronautical engineering from Punjab Engineering University before emigrating to the United States. She became a naturalised citizen in the 1980s. In 1988, she earned a doctorate in aerospace engineering from the University of Colorado, having previously earned a master's degree from the University of Texas.
